What the treatment is
An intraoral scanner captures a detailed digital 3D record of the teeth and gums using a small handheld camera, in place of conventional impression putty and trays.
Who may need it
Digital scanning may be used when a crown, bridge, aligner, or other appliance is planned, and for recording the current position of the teeth for planning or comparison.
General overview
The scan takes a few minutes in the chair and produces a digital model that can be viewed on screen and sent to the dental laboratory electronically.
What to expect
The process involves no impression material, so it is generally more comfortable and can be repeated if a section needs rescanning. Your dentist can show the scan and explain what it indicates.
