What the treatment is
Root canal treatment removes inflamed or infected soft tissue (pulp) from inside a tooth, cleans and shapes the root canals, and seals them. The aim is to keep the natural tooth rather than remove it.
Who may need it
It is commonly considered for lasting toothache, sensitivity to heat, swelling, or an infection seen on a radiograph. A dental examination confirms whether the pulp is affected.
General overview
The tooth is numbed, the canals are cleaned and filled, and a permanent restoration or crown is usually recommended afterwards to protect the tooth. Treatment may be completed in one or more visits.
What to expect
Mild discomfort for a few days afterwards is normal. Following the dentist's instructions on chewing and returning for the final crown helps protect the treated tooth.
